Sotogrande

Sotogrande is one of the most westerly points of Costa del Sol and one of the most exclusive resorts on the Costa del Sol. It is only a 20 minute drive from Gibraltar and on any one of the 300 days of sunshine a year the views of the Rock and Africa can literally take your breath away.

Back in 1962 Sotogrande was originally the brainchild of an American industrialist Colonel Joesph McMicking, president of the Ayala Corporation, whose wish it was to create a luxurious resort in this area of the Med in close proximity to the buzz of the rest of the Costa del Sol. The name Sotogrande came from one of the five farms bought by Alfredo Melian at the request of Joseph McMicking.

For the best part of the year the resort remains a quiet and tranquil place. During the high season months (July to August) the place can get quite busy with Sotogrande being one of the preferred destinations for Spanish families and also celebrities. To the left you can see the famous footballer Raul and his family relaxing on one of Sotogrande's beautiful beaches.

In total Sotogrande consists of about 5,000 acres of well laid out and manicured landscapes containing luxurious residential developments in leafy suburbs, championship golf courses, country estates, riverside property development surrounding the stunning marina - the port of Sotogrande and also the Sotogrande international school (More information for this is below). No expense was spared during its construction and development with the infrastructure completely hidden underground thus preserving the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A wealth of activity in Sotogrande

Sotogrande is world famous for its golf courses boastin of such high profile tournaments as the Ryder cup in 1997 - hosted at the Club de Golf Valderrama, the World Golf Championship in 2000 and also the Volvo masters of 2002. The golf and country club is certainly up to the high standards of the surrounding villas and developments so if you love Golf and are looking to take a holiday in a seriously luxurious golf resort this is definitely the place for you.

As well as Golf there are also polo fields, tennis centres, riding stables and of course the marina of Sotogrande which is the first port of call upon entering the Mediterranean. The marina has nearly 600 berths and caters for boats of up to 72 metres in length. The marina has state of the art facilities and all berths are connected to TV and satellite.

The Puerto de Sotogrande is an exclusive development situated around the marina which is an ideal place to live for those who like to be near the water and their boats.

Close by is the Guadiaro estuary - a natural, protected area of 27 hectares of marshland at the mouth of the River Guadiaro. This is a favourite place for nature lovers and particularly bird watchers.
